Fine line tattoos heal faster than most tattoo styles — the trauma to the skin is minimal because so little ink is being deposited. Follow this and you'll be through the itchy phase inside a week and fully settled by three.
Day 0 — the day of the tattoo
You leave the studio wrapped in a breathable second-skin film. Leave it on overnight. Sleep in a clean t-shirt on fresh sheets. Alcohol thins the blood and slows healing — skip it for tonight.
Days 1–3 — the fresh phase
- Remove the wrap under a warm shower and wash the tattoo gently with fragrance-free soap and clean hands.
- Pat (don't rub) dry with a clean towel or kitchen roll.
- Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free moisturiser 2–3 times a day. Less is more — the skin needs to breathe.
- Expect some plasma weep and a shiny film. This is normal.
Days 4–7 — the itch
The tattoo will start to feel tight, dry and slightly itchy. This is the top layer of skin renewing. Do not scratch. Do not pick. If it flakes, let it fall off on its own — pulling it will lift ink with it and leave patchy healing.
Days 8–14 — settling
By day 10 the surface should look almost fully healed. The deeper skin is still knitting for another 2–3 weeks, so keep moisturising and stay out of direct sun, chlorine and open water (baths, pools, sea) until day 21.
What's normal, what isn't
- Normal: mild redness, itching, flaking, a slightly cloudy look for the first two weeks.
- Not normal: spreading redness, heat, pus, fever, or pain increasing after day 3. Contact the studio or a GP.
"Ninety percent of healing is doing less, not more."
Long-term care
Fine line ages best on skin that's moisturised daily and protected from the sun. A daily SPF 30+ on any exposed tattooed skin is the single biggest thing you can do to keep the linework crisp for twenty years.
