Not every tattoo can be covered, and no reputable artist will tell you otherwise on the strength of a phone photo. Book a free consultation at the studio so Emma can see the tattoo in person: how dark and saturated the ink is, how it has aged, how the skin is now, and where on the body it sits.

Sometimes the honest answer is that laser-lightening a few sessions first will unlock a much better cover-up. Sometimes the existing piece is workable and the new design can be built around it. You'll leave the consultation knowing exactly which path is on the table.

Cover-ups almost always mean going bigger, bolder and darker than the original. A faded tribal band can disappear under a botanical wrap. A small saturated black piece can become part of a larger blackwork composition. A name in fading script can be reworked into a considered piece with real meaning.

What isn't possible: covering a heavy black tattoo with delicate fine line, or hiding a dark piece under pale colour work. The physics of ink under skin doesn't allow it, and any artist promising otherwise is setting you up for a disappointing result.

Once the assessment is done, Emma will draw a custom design worked to the shape and darkness of what's underneath. Expect a second short review before the appointment to sign off the drawing. Larger cover-ups may be split across two sessions with a healing gap between.

Cover-up work is always quoted at the consultation — it depends on the size, the density of the original ink and how much design and session time will be needed. Every piece is quoted individually once the design is agreed.
