Why hand-drawn matters

Script from a font file always looks like script from a font file. The letters are mathematically identical, the joins are perfect in a way that isn't quite human, and the piece never feels like it belongs to you specifically. Every script commission at Desire Ink is drawn by hand — the same phrase, drawn twice, will land twice differently.

You'll see two or three drawn variations at the consultation. Emma will refine one with you before the appointment.

Choosing what to write

Short is almost always better than long. A single word, a name, a two-line phrase or a date will read cleanly for decades. A full paragraph in fine line will blur into a grey block within ten years — the ink migrates slightly under the skin, and thin letters lose their gaps first.

Common commissions at the Rotherham studio: a child's name in the parent's own handwriting (bring a scanned sample), a lyric or short quote, a single meaningful word like eternal, steady, or a family motto.

Size, placement and legibility

For a fine line script that will still read cleanly at ten years, the minimum comfortable letter height is around 6mm. Below that, the risk of blur is real. Ribs, inner arm, collarbone, sternum and behind the ear all suit script well; hands and fingers do not — thin lettering on high-friction skin rarely holds.

How pieces are quoted

Every script piece is quoted individually once the wording, size and placement are agreed — a short phrase sits differently to a longer quote, and combining the script with a small motif (a sprig, a butterfly, a symbol) changes the design time.
